Surprised by many was the announcement from Michael J. Fox letting the public know that he had Parkinson’s Disease.  Was it his age or the disease itself that was the surprise, I wouldn’t be able to say; however, it was a disease that many may have known by name, but not for what the disease had on the body.  Though I was familiar with the disease, because my Godmother had Parkinson’s it really never clicked until recently that this is too another neurological disorder that affects the body, just like Alzheimer’s.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

“Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects your movement. It develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand. But while tremor may be the most well-known sign of Parkinson’s disease, the disorder also commonly causes stiffness or slowing of movement.”(1) More than 1.5 million American’s live with this disorder.

Why the research?

Research is needed for this disorder like many other disorders and diseases.  There are medicines available for Parkinson’s but they are not cures for this disorder.  You are encouraged to visit The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to learn about ways that you can get involved, how Michael J Fox is educating others about this disease, and how you can get involved.  What is even more exciting about his cause is there is a link for researchers and how they can get involved too!

Learn more about his cause and how you can be apart of helping others.  Take the time to view the public service announcement that features Michael J. Fox and Mohamed Ali in the fight.
